Picking the right yacht charter for your group

The most common mistake people make when booking a yacht charter is choosing the boat first. They see a photo of a catamaran, they send a WhatsApp, and three exchanges later they're paying for a boat that's either half-empty or genuinely overcrowded.
Start with your group size. The boat follows.
Why group size matters more than you think
Yacht capacity numbers are legal maximums. A 12-person catamaran can legally carry 12 people. What that doesn't tell you is that 12 people on the deck of a 42-foot catamaran at lunch time, all trying to reach the food table at once, is uncomfortable. The same boat with 8 people is relaxed.
A good rule of thumb: book for about 70% of the boat's rated capacity if you want space to move around. If you're fine with it being a social-first, standing-room-around-the-rail kind of day, you can go closer to the maximum.
2–4 people: small and fast
Bayliner 325 — From RM 1,900 per trip. Compact luxury powerboat, max 6 guests but best at 4 or fewer. Good for couples or a very small group who want speed and privacy over deck space. Half-day itinerary covers the southern archipelago, a swim stop, and a beach landing. Skipper and fuel included.
Masami — From RM 1,600 per trip. Small, fast, and social. Masami is the pick when you want to cover ground — island hopping at pace rather than anchoring and drifting. Suits groups of 2–4 who want to see multiple spots in a half-day without spending 30 minutes motoring between each one.
For couples doing a sunset cruise: ask about the Bayliner as a private option. It runs about RM 2,400 for a sunset departure. That's the same as 4 tickets on a premium shared cruise, and you get the boat to yourselves.
6–10 people: the sweet spot
This is where most of our bookings land, and for good reason. The boats in this category are large enough for everyone to find their own corner of the deck, small enough that the captain can run a more personal itinerary, and priced at a per-head rate that usually works out to RM 280–450 depending on the vessel.
Lumlee Catamaran — From RM 3,800 per trip. 42-foot catamaran, recommended at 6–8 guests for a comfortable day charter. Wide beam means the deck is genuinely spacious. Good for families or mixed groups who want to swim, eat, and sit in the sun without feeling packed in.
Mila — From RM 3,200 per trip. Mila is the all-rounder. Powerboat with a full beam deck, catered lunch included in most packages, and a route that goes to Pulau Payar or the southern islands depending on season. Works for 6–8 people.
Lorelai Sailing Catamaran — From RM 3,600 per trip. If you want sails up at some point during the day, Lorelai is the pick. The itinerary includes sailing time alongside powered sections. It's slower than a motorboat — you're not covering as many islands — but the experience on the water is different. Suits groups who want the boat itself to be part of the activity.
12–20 people: the birthday / team category
Once your group crosses 10, your options shift. Most smaller boats won't handle the weight or the noise safely. You're looking at larger catamarans with proper dining setups and more crew on board.
Lagoon 51 "Senja" — From RM 8,400 per full day. This is our flagship. 51-foot catamaran, 2025 model, clean deck with a shaded seating area aft and a flybridge for views. Comfortably handles 12; maximum 16 for a full-day charter. Full crew, proper catering, and an itinerary that can run overnight to Koh Lipe if your group wants to stay in Thailand for a night. The per-head rate at 12 guests is RM 700 — which is high for a shared cruise but reasonable for a fully private, catered day on a flagship catamaran.
Fairlady — From RM 4,800 per trip. Power catamaran, seats up to 20 comfortably. Wider deck than the Lagoon 51 but less luxurious fitout. Good for corporate team days or large families where the priority is space and everyone being comfortable, rather than premium finishes.
Eagle Magic — From RM 5,500 for a private charter. You've probably seen Eagle Magic marketed as a sunset party boat. It can also be booked privately for groups of 15–30 for a full-day or half-day trip. The DJ and sound system stay unless you ask for a quieter setup. Good for groups who want a celebration atmosphere.
20+ people: the event category
Above 20 guests, you're in event territory. This means the Erica (up to 65 guests), the Beauty Princess (up to 200 as a shared party cruise or 80 for a private buyout), or the Eagle Magic at full capacity.
At this scale, the booking process changes. We don't quote these online because the pricing depends on catering requirements, duration, departure time, and whether you need the DJ and entertainment infrastructure. Message us with your group size, date, and what you're trying to do and we'll build a quote.
Hidden costs to ask about before you pay
Fuel surcharges. Most boats include fuel in the quoted price for a standard itinerary. If you want to extend the route — say, a run to the Thai islands instead of the local archipelago — there's a fuel premium. Ask upfront.
Catering. Some boats include a basic lunch; others are bring-your-own. Premium catering (sit-down, served, multiple courses) is an add-on on most vessels and adds RM 80–200 per person depending on the spread. Know what's included before you confirm.
Additional crew. For groups over 15, some vessels require an additional deck hand. This is sometimes built into the quote, sometimes not. It's worth asking.
Port fees. If your itinerary includes a stop at Pulau Payar marine park, there's a conservation fee (currently RM 30 per person). This is separate from the boat charter price.
Overtime. Charters are quoted for a set duration, typically 4–6 hours for a half-day and 8–10 hours for a full day. If you want to stay out longer, the captain will charge an hourly rate. Agree on this rate before departure.
The question to ask before you confirm
"What's included in the price, specifically?"
Fuel, skipper, crew, catering, equipment (snorkelling gear, inflatables), port fees, and any planned stops. Get a clear answer on each. A reputable operator will give you a written breakdown; if they won't, that tells you something.
All our vessel quotes include a line-by-line breakdown. Message us with your dates and group size and we'll come back with options the same day.
